Hey Everyone,

I have an issue with my wheel bearing, but more importantly the nut on the end of the CV shaft that holds the wheel bearing (and hub) together.

My problem is that even with a split pin, the nut persists on untightening. This is a problem because when the nut starts to loosen the wheel bearing does not work correctly (is not compressed and floats around too much.

Picture of the front hub assembly if anyone needs it in their explanation.

My question is why would the CV nut loosten, and how can i prevent this?

Note: for those of you that dont know, this problem causes the wheel to fly off the car with half the hub still attached to it.

Regards,
Ivan

I'd say it can be caused by Multiple factors, But the most likely is Erosion of the threads Due to Rust,

if you have taken off the Hub Nut in the Recent past it may have removed a layer of Rust/Erosion material causing the threads to Shrink in size making the Nut a Slight bit more Slack, you can Possibly use some sort of Plastic based Locking Solution and leave it sit for a bit or maby there is some other product that i may not be aware of,

How tight are you making the nut?

pretty tight, im using breaker bar to tighten it, and it loosened over a period of 3 months.

I will be changing the bearings as i was driving for a couple of days like this and simply dont trust the bearings on a track anymore. I might just get new CV's at the same time just in case. (and have a spare set incase i snap them).

I've never noticed this problem before but if it shows up on the trackcar I'll be able to vouch firsthand on a solution.

From what I remember from the factory torque settings the front hub nut needs to be mega tight. Not sure if some thread lock would be recommended but might be worth a try.

Three wheels is not a nice avenue to explore..

Found out the reason the centre nut comes loose is because the bearings are overheating, and expanding the hub.

That's good info Ivan, duly noted for future reference.
