I have ordered 1 of these ECUs, and obviously done a lot of research into which ECU to choose, so i thought i would give a quick run down of what features it has and general info about it - the idea is to generate some discussion and educate as to what is out there
The Adaptronic ECU is made in Australia, current retails (as of 20/07/07) for $990AU, loom is extra - $66AU for 0.5m loom, $99AU for 2.0m loom
Size: 174mm x 92mm x 50mm
Weight: 0.4kg
Trigger Inputs:
Able to select between
- 3 inputs supporting Reluctor (thats what toyota uses) OR
- 3 optical/digital inputs, selectable rising/falling edge, optional internal pull-ups
Analogue Inputs:
- MAP Sensor, 0-5v, up to 3 BAR positive pressure (4 BAR absolute) (able to be calibrated)
- TPS Sensor, 0-5v, adjustable zero/full throttle points (able to be calibrated)
- Spare, 0-5v, used for logging or 0-5v Linear Wideband Oxygen Sensors (able to be calibrated)
- Water Temp - variable resistance type
- Air Temp variable - resistance type
- Aux Temp - variable type (for logging/switching outputs)
- EGO (Oxygen) Sensor, 0-1v Narrow band, 0-1v Wideband Bosch, 0-3v Zietronix Wideband (0-5v linear types supported on Spare 0-5v input, M&W UEGO, TechEdge, Innovate supported on 2nd serial port)
- Knock Sensor input - High impedance input, bandpass filtered
- 2 x Speed Sensor inputs (able to be calibrated)
Digital Inputs:
- 8 x 12v Digital Inputs, each configured as active high, or active low
- Can be used for clutch, elec load, A/C, WOT, Closed Throttle, Enrich/Retard, Switch to 2nd Fuel/Ign Maps
Injector Drivers:
- 4 injector drivers, constant current or peak-hold, selectable current (0.5A, 0.9A, 1.5A or 1.9A)
- able to be fired Full sequential, Batch, Semi-sequential every period or semi-sequential every second period, Half/third/quarter speed full sequential, all at once every cylinder
- Optional batch fire during cranking
Ignition Drivers:
- 3 (beta firmware supports 4 - this uses 1 of the digital outputs as the 4th)
- Selectable as firing on rising edge or falling edge
- Connectable direct to standard igniters
- If spare, 3rd output can be used as a tacho driver
Aux Outputs:
- 8 general purpose outputs, 4 high current (7A - 3A inductive), 3 of which support PWM, 4 low current (200mA) for driving LED's or relays
- output options are Wastegate (Boost) control (based on seperate wastegate map), A/C control, PWM idle motor control, Stepper idle motor control (hold or pulse - uses multiple outputs), electric BOV, fuel pump switching, PWM driven from spare Fuel/Ign map (for water injector etc), pressure regulator control valve, tacho driver, VVT PWM control
- Also support switching based on any of the following - TPS, MAP, WaterTemp, AirTemp, AuxTemp, RPM, Knock, AirFuel Ratio, Injector Duty Cycle
Mapping/Tuning Points and Features:
- 2 sets of Fuel/Ign maps
- 32 RPM points (set as 200, 250, 300 or 500 rpm points), 16 Load points (evenly spread from min load to max load)
- Load configurable as TPS or MAP, TPS using 2nd map as MAP backup, MAP using 2nd map as TPS backup, Both maps MAP or TPS - digital input to select, MAP and TPS map - digital input to select, MAP and TPS map, use MAP on closed throttle, otherwise TPS, Use max/min/average/sum (MAP, TPS), TPS from table multiplied by value in MAP table - NOTE: all MAP & TPS options use BOTH maps
- Fuel: Open loop, closed loop, and two adaptive modes (requires EGO sensor), can run open loop above a specific MAP, target AFR can be set across rev and load ranges. NOTE: This is the ADAPTIVE (self tuning) feature.
- Ignition: Open loop, closed loop, adaptive (alpha version of adaptive)
- Fuel adjustment based on engine temperature, air temperature, accelerator pump, post-crank enrich, cranking enrichment, WOT
- Ignition adjustment based on engine temp, air temp
- All limiters are selectable fuel and/or ignition
- Soft rev limit (every 2nd output), hard rev limit, cold rev limit (limit RPM until certain temp is reached), Adjustable MAP based limit (boost cut), Flatshift limit (requires clutch switch)
- Throttle off overrun available
- Accel Pump, TPS and/or MAP based (configurable proportionality) as well as RPM based
- Injector staging (2 + 2 injector outputs used)
Coming Features:
- Traction control IN DEVELOPMENT (not available yet)
- Launch control IN DEVELOPMENT (not available yet)
Now for my thoughts
This ECU has a lot of features found only in much more expensive ECUs (such as adaptive (auto) tuning, and this is its main selling point, however, adaptive tuning is only good for a base map/setup, you shouldnt rely on it for ALL the tuning.
Also, the owner of the company that makes these ECU's has done an install on a 4efte, and it contains wiring information, and an ECU map for an EP82 4efte - this can be found HERE (http://www.adaptronic.com.au/field.php#Paseo). this will make installs for GT starlets quite easy, although it does not specify which version of the EP82 ECU was used by the engine, so the wiring may differ slightly.
Another thing i like about this ECU is that it is firmware upgradable (for free). You just download the new code for the ECU, open up the program and write it onto the ECU, this means new features are easy to get.
Final thing i like is the support from the creator and his employee (there are only 2 ppl in the company AFAIK). They are always answering questions for interested parties and problem solving for ppl with troubles on the official forum.
1 of the problems currently is that the 4 ignition output feature is new and as yet untested (AFAIK), this means no sequential ignition for our 4 cyls atm, but you can still run waste spark (2 ignition outputs).
Another limiting factor is the 4 injector outputs.....this is fine for a street 4 cyl, but even serious high horsepower 4 cyls will run 8 injectors, and this could be better controlled with more drivers. You could run 2 injectors off each output, but you could have better control with more drivers.
Once i get this ECU up and running i will be able to give you some more insight, but these are the features available, feel free to discuss/question
