A modern coil-over-oil unit

The image below shows a typical modern coil-over-oil unit. This is an all-in-one system that carries both the spring and the shock absorber. The type illustrated here is more likely to be an aftermarket item - it's unlikely you'd get this level of adjustment on your regular passenger car. The adjustable spring plate can be used to make the springs stiffer and looser, whilst the adjustable damping valve can be used to adjust the compression damping of the shock absorber. More sophisticated units have adjustable rebound damping as well as a remote reservoir. Whilst you don't typically get this level of engineering on car suspension, most motorbikes do have preload, rebound and spring tension adjustment.

Quite a number of companies make coilovers for the mighty Starlet. The brands range from Tein to the cheaper D2 brand. Generally, most of the Japanese brands tend to come quite firm but the quality is greater than the cheaper brands.

Also it is wise to note that a coilover is not necessarily the best that you can get. Aftermarket struts are also available that provide adjustable damping support however you would not be able to adjust the ride height or the spring tension adjustment. However if you know, or have someone knowledgeable to advise you, you can get a good combination of shock/spring without spending a lot of money on coilovers.
