    Smile 5efe into ep91

    Hi all
    I have a 5efe motor out of an automatic 1994 Paseo and I want to slip it into my 1997 manual ep91 in place of the stock 4efe if it's not gonna be a nightmare that is...........
    I'd welcome suggestions but a few thoughts are-
    1. ECU, is the ECU from a manual 5efe a must have? (I have the 4efe manual ecu and the automatic 5efe ecu already)

    2. Any hassles fitting a flywheel and clutch to the 5efe auto motor in place of the existing driveplate and torque converter?
    3. Are there any other differences that anybody knows of between the automatic and manual versions of the 5efe? (camshafts, distributor etc)

    you should be able to get away with running the 5EFE auto ECU with some stuffing around to make it work without hte auto.

    have a search on tercelonline forums, they might have some info about getting the 5efe auto ecu to work with a manual box

    Thanks for the tip Jezza.
    Stuffing around, particularly of the electronic kind is something I don't wanna get into with this proposed swap so I'll assume I need the proper manual ECU.
    I've read that I need to be picky about the age of a replacement ECU as well, cos Toyota like to fiddle with its wiring from year to year.
    My motor is a 94 and my starlet is a 97 what are the chances of say a 92(most common year for these el44 Paseos) Paseo manual ECU being a plug and play proposition???
    Can I do harm to anything by plugging in an ECU that my Starlet doesn't like? (such as the Paseo auto ECU???

    no chance it will be plug and play

    you are gonna need to swap the engine loom into the starlet, and work out how to wire up the chassis/dash looms to the 5E engine loom

    Jezza you just saved me a LOT of painful, expensive and probably pointless stuffing around, thankyou.
    This swap was suggested to me in another forum and on the face of it sounds like it would be amongst the simplest of swaps considering I'm just trying to fit a slightly larger version of what I have now.
    The only other time I attempted an engine swap (1984 Diahatsu Charade turbo into 1991 Charade non turbo) was on a car that I thought had NO electronics (thought I was safe, silly me) but guess what?, the Charade had a complex fuel pressure regulating gismo (electronic) that auto electricians were TERRIFIED of...........
    Had to abandon that swap because of electronics.........
    My instincts tell me that the Starlet swap would quickly turn into an expensive nightmare that would never work as intended no matter how much sweat or money I poured into it.
    Unfortunately this is a deal breaker for me. This swap had to be cheap and cheerful or it's a no go.
    Fortunately the motor and other bits cost me very little so I won't be out of pocket by dropping the idea.
    I'm disappointed but I'm very grateful that you saved me so much trouble,

    no worries mate

    im guessing its an aussie EP91 you are working with? if so, your best bet is to keep saving and try to get yourself a glanza V halfcut of the same year as your car. the looms will be plug in and you get everything you need to go turbo.

    if you are stuck with the new P plate laws, then just dont worry for a while. and save for a faster car. and if you like n/a, then a bit of wiring wouldnt be holding you back
